What is Hypnosis?

The old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have given way to proven, scientifically sound applications. Today the use of hypnosis is seen in medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sports, and education.

Our minds work on two levels – the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind. The unconscious mind controls our habits. In the relaxed state known as hypnosis, we can communicate directly with the unconscious mind. This is why it is so quick and easy to change habits of a lifetime with hypnosis.

Check out the video below for further details on what hypnosis is & what it can help with.

What is NLP?

NLP, on the other hand, has been called the science of success as it provides many tools for overcoming barriers holding us back in different areas of our lives. It focuses on the study and pursuit of excellence in all endeavours and provides many powerful tools & processes to achieve this. Highly successful people like Oprah, Bill Gates, Tiger Woods & President Obama use it on an everyday basis to stay at the top of their game.

Like hypnosis, NLP also works on the unconscious mind and can be used to achieve mindset changes and improvements in a matter of minutes, compared to other techniques, which may take days, weeks or even months.

What is EFT Tapping?

In relation to EFT Tapping, its a stress reduction technique and/or Emotional acupuncture without the needles!

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It's a psychophysiological technique in that while we are tapping on the meridian points (the same ones used with acupuncture) and thinking about or voicing a problem, it calms the physiology.

Once this occurs, cognitive shifts (or reframes) naturally take place. Symptoms can be relieved while decreasing any distress around an issue. By so doing, you can often eliminate the problem or dramatically reduce its severity!

How can they help?

As both hypnosis and NLP work at the level of the unconscious mind, which is where learning and change occur, then learning or change can be achieved rapidly with these techniques, compared to other modalities.

As EFT Tapping produces such a powerful calming effect on the body and thereby creates cognitive shifts (or reframes) re any problem clients may have, it also works exceptionally well with helping clients overcome any challenges they may have.

For example, most phobias can be treated in a single session using EFT Tapping, NLP and hypnosis, which might take months to deal with using other techniques and even then, the results may not be as effective.

Why use NLP, EFT Tapping and Hypnosis together?

The system that we use is based on advanced hypnosis, EFT Tapping and NLP. All of these systems are completely safe. You are aware and in control at every moment and can terminate the session at any time. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis, EFT Tapping or NLP. You can’t be made to do something against your will! All are safe, relaxing, and provide an enjoyable experience.

Like all treatment modalities, each have their own strengths and weaknesses. So by using the best of all 3 modalities, this allows us to achieve the best of three worlds - to provide the best results for our clients in the minimum time possible.

Is hypnosis an accepted form of medical treatment?

As in any field of endeavour, hypnosis or hypnotherapy has its doubters. It has, however, been an accepted form of medical treatment since the 1950s. It’s been found to be a highly effective way to control fears and negative behaviours as well as help with mental health issues. Its other main advantage is that it doesn’t include medication. Hypnotherapists help patients access the power of their subconscious mind, which is where many of these issues reside.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is generally considered safe when practiced by trained professionals. It is a natural and non-invasive method that does not involve mind control or loss of consciousness. The client remains conscious and in control at all times and can never be made to do anything they don’t want to do.

However, it is essential to consult a qualified hypnotherapist or healthcare provider to ensure proper guidance and suitability for your specific needs.

Does a hypnotized person remain in complete control?

People are always in full control under hypnosis. They are generally in just a very relaxed hypnotic state where hear everything that is happening around them & remember everything what occurred.

While hypnotized, they also have heightened awareness and very focused attention. They generally also become much more open to suggestions and thereby are more likely to consider new ideas or options that can help them resolve their particular issue.

Will I stay completely awake during hypnosis?

Many people are unaware that hypnotic trance is a natural state that we go into up to 120 times per day. Examples include day dreaming, being engrossed in a movie or book & time just flies by or doing anything on auto pilot. It therefore occurs while we are wide awake & therefore doesn’t involve sleep.

Its been proven over and over again that clients remain totally awake during hypnosis and in full control at all times. In fact, in a therapeutic setting, all hypnosis is self hypnosis, where the client is really hypnotizing themselves under the guidance of the therapist.

Once clients have experienced hypnosis once, they generally find it very relaxing and enjoyable & something that they look forward to!

Does your brain work differently while in a hypnotised state

Hypnosis works directly w/the unconscious part of your mind, where barriers typically exist to you achieving your goals and dreams in life – eg lose weight or quit smoking or drinking less alcohol. It bypasses both the conscious part of the mind, which most of us are very familiar with, as well as the critical faculty. The critical faculty is that part of the mind that allows you to accept or reject new ideas based on how they relate to your unconscious beliefs and values.

As a result, during hypnosis, you become much more open to new ideas or concepts and thereby more willing break through beliefs and barriers that have held you back in the past. The brain also gains hyperawareness, a state of being in control of one’s body and/or surroundings without consciously thinking about it.

How many hypnosis sessions are typically required?

This depends on the issue being addressed. With our Reach your Ideal Weight program, for example, clients need only one session to get started with the program and start noticing their progress. With our Quit Smoking program,  many of our clients only need to come for one session to quit. A small number, however, prefer or require a more gradual approach and will quit after 2 or 3 sessions. Our other programs require between one to three sessions to achieve noticeable improvements with the issue being addressed.

The number of hypnosis sessions needed can vary depending on the individual and the issue being addressed. Some people may achieve their desired results in a few sessions, while others may require more extended therapy. The hypnotherapist will work with you to determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Most people can be hypnotized to some extent. However, the degree of responsiveness to hypnosis can vary from person to person. Some individuals may naturally be more receptive, while others may require more practice or have specific conditions that affect their susceptibility.

For those that are less receptive, the hypnotherapist will typically use a greater variety of techniques to help them enter a hypnotised state and/or simply devote more time to help them get there.

We all go into hypnotic trance up to 120 times/day (day dreaming, being engrossed in a movie or book or doing anything on auto-pilot – like driving). So it’s a natural state we all into on a daily basis.

Can I be stuck in a hypnotic state?

No, it is not possible to get stuck in a hypnotic state. Hypnosis is a temporary and reversible state of mind. If the hypnotist were to leave the session abruptly or if an external event were to occur, you would naturally return to your normal state of consciousness.

Remember, hypnosis is a natural state that we enter up to 120 times per day – for example, when we are day dreaming, engrossed in a movie or book or when we do things on auto-pilot. In each of these examples, we simply enter into hypnosis & then easily exit this state when required.

When did hypnosis officially start being used?

Franz Mesmer was an Austrian physician that brought the attention of the public to hypnosis around 1770. He is thereby typically credited as being the founder of hypnosis. He spent most of career studying hypnosis, hypnotic techniques and how it could be used in a positively way to effect the human mind.

In his day, he used terms like “animal magnetism” or “mesmerism” to describe hypnosis, which are sometimes still used even today.

But there are records of the use of hypnosis that date back to 1500 BC with its use in ancient Egypt.

Imhotep, the world’s first known physician, used healing sanctuaries known as Sleep Temples. The temples were used for a type of suggestion therapy, and people would go to be healed from problems both physical and mental. It’s said that patients visiting a Sleep Temple would be put under the influence of incantation, or hypnotic state. Before ultimately falling asleep, the physician would give them whatever suggestions might help overcome their problem in hopes that the gods would visit the patient during his sleep and fix them.

Which Famous People Have Used Hypnosis

Here are but a small list of famous people that have used hypnosis to help them overcome obstacles & achieve success in life.

Kate Middleton – suffered from acute morning sickness during her pregnancy and overcame her symptoms with hypnotherapy

Most great athletes use hypnosis or imagery to improve their performance including Michael Jordan (basketball), Wayne Gretzky (hockey), Eric Heiden (Olympic speed skater), Tiger Woods (golf), and likely even Babe Ruth (baseball).

Tiger Woods, for example, at the age of 13, began seeing a hypnotist to help him to block out distractions and focus on the golf course.

The following celebrities who have used hypnosis as part of their weight-loss program include:

• Fergie, the lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas, keeps a hypnotherapist on speed dial when she’s touring, according to Marie Claire magazine.

Thomas Edison (inventor of light bulb) used self-hypnosis on a daily basis

Are stage hypnosis and clinical hypnosis very different?

When people think of hypnosis, they tend to think of stage hypnosis. This is the show used for entertainment where a hypnotist chooses seemingly random people, hypnotizes them, and then gets them do silly things for laughs. This has, however, has little to do with clinical hypnosis or hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is an accepted form of therapy which helps people overcome various challenges via a relaxed mind and strategic suggestion.

Is everyone suitable for stage hypnosis?

A hypnotic stage show is very similar to a magic show – what you think is happening is not what’s really going on!

The hypnotist gives the impression that anyone from the audience can be hypnotized on stage and perform various acts whether they like it or not.

The reality is that some people are open or prone to hypnotic suggestions than others and therefore more suitable subjects for the hypnotist doing the show than others.

What the audience doesn’t see or appreciate is the careful filtering of subjects that occurs during the show to carefully select the most suitable subjects that are the most suggestable and thereby, the most willing to do what the hypnotist asks them to do. See the 3rd fact below for further elaboration on this point.

Can hypnosis can be used as an anesthesia?

A number of studies have found that hypnosis can be an effective tool for pain reduction management. Its been found that hypnosis removes the emotional experience of pain, while still allowing one to experience the sensory sensation. By doing so, the severity of the pain can often be dramatically altered & reduced.

A great example is hypnobirthing, where many women learn to use hypnosis to help with the having a natural childbirth. But there have also been numerous examples of the use of hypnosis to help people get teeth removed with a dentist with no anaesthetic being used.

Can I undergo self-hypnosis?

Yes, self-hypnosis is possible and can be a useful skill to learn. It allows individuals to induce a state of relaxation and focus on their own, using techniques taught by a hypnotherapist or through self-guided resources like books or recordings.
