Six Major areas of Life - Balance vs Time

In our previous article, we introduced the importance of balance in our 6 major areas of life.

Balance, however, does not imply spending an equal amount of time on all six areas. Balance has more to do with focus, rather than time. Your focus can go to another area without it taking hours out of your day. For example, take health & fitness. If your focus goes to health & fitness, it doesn’t have to take the same amount of time as your work/business. As most of us spend around 8 hours per day on work/business, and then another 8 hours per day sleeping, then obviously we can’t devote the same amount of time to our health & fitness. There just wouldn’t be enough hours in the day. The key thing is that your focus switches from time to time between all six areas.

As another example, to keep your relationships nice & strong, all you need to do is to focus on them from time to time. So while work/business and other areas may take up a great deal of time and effort, it doesn’t mean we should neglect the others!

One final important point about having goals in all 6 areas is that they need to be congruent and aligned with one another. For example, let’s say someone is focusing on weight loss as part of their health goal. During the week, they stick to a proper diet, do a bit of exercise and lead a healthier lifestyle. They go to the gym a couple of times for a couple of hours and burn roughly 500 calories each visit.

On the weekend, however, they decide it’s time to socialize & spend time with friends & family. So as a reward for their hard work during the week, they go out, have some drinks & finish with a nice big dessert. So in a few short minutes, they’ve added some 2000 calories, essentially negating all the work they did during the week losing weight! So from an iNLP perspective, we say your goals in each area need to take an integral approach. That is, they need to be aligned with and encompass or take into account all of the other goals in your life.

Finally, to make all this worthwhile, we should ensure that we really enjoy and have lots of fun progressively achieving our goals. By doing so, this will ensure that we stay on track and reach our desired destination with each goal that we set.

So when you’re deciding on your life goals moving forward, think carefully about your desired outcomes in all the 6 areas, decide how you will spread your focus across them all, ensure your outcomes are all aligned and that you’ll have heaps of FUN!
