Singer/songwriter celebrates her 3rd anniversary as a non-smoker on Anzac day 2018
Ever since she could remember, successful singer/songwriter Michelle Parsons had wanted to work in the music business.
And she had fulfilled her dream, being one of the best acoustic solo acts on the Victorian live music scene.
Yet she was in danger of throwing that away due to the 35-year, 25-a-day cigarette habit that was damaging her voice and her health.
Three years ago, facing a major operation for a thyroid problem – and the possibility of saying goodbye to her beloved career, she decided enough was enough.
Having already tried to quit smoking using nicotine patches and going cold turkey without success, she turned to professional hypnotherapist & NLP specialist Dr Ian Kaminskyj, who runs the Melbourne NLP Hypnosis Centre, for help, having spotted an advert for his ‘Quit Cigarettes in 60 minutes’ program on Facebook.
And the result? Ian helped Michelle rid herself of her bad habit in just one session!
“I put out a cigarette before walking into the building for that session and I’ve never lit another one since,” she said.

Michelle explained that she had ultimately decided to quit with our program because she knew it was affecting her voice. She was suffering from sore throats and croakiness and couldn’t hit some notes as well as she used to.
She also needed surgery to help her control her weight gain resulting from an auto-immune, thyroid condition, but was worried about how smoking would affect her recovery.
“Due to a thyroid issue related to auto-immune disease, I had gained a lot of weight. I needed to have gastric sleeve surgery, but could never have contemplated it as a smoker. Let me tell you – it was the first surgery I had as a non-smoker and to wake up not groggy and recover so quickly was amazing. Such a difference!”
And stopping has changed her life in a multitude of other ways, too.
Michelle had her session with Ian on Anzac day, 25th April, 2015. So, come Anzac day 25th April, 2018, Michelle will have been a non-smoker now for 3 years.
Michelle said she is now singing better than when she was in her 30s and 40s. She also has more stamina and less sore throats and colds.
“I can’t begin to explain the freedom you gain. It’s true, you don’t realise just how occupied your mind is thinking about cigarettes – until it’s gone,” she said.
“I was tired of being a smoker. It was costing me a fortune and work was becoming a no smoking zone, even on the grounds (I work at a uni). Quitting was also a tribute to my Dad on the second anniversary of his passing – he hated smoking, it was the one thing I did that disappointed him.”
And she has never looked back.
“I’m back at the gym and working at getting fit again. I can walk and climb stairs without puffing like a steam train.
“I have never been tempted to even have a puff since my session with Ian.
“I’m even able to buy things for myself with the savings and I’m not late with bills to fund a habit that was killing me.
“I hadn’t travelled overseas in 27 years and I was able to go and see my friend in the US for my 50th birthday. It has made my life a whole lot easier not having to worry about having a cig.
“But it’s the freedom I enjoy most of all – it’s AMAZING and I can’t thank Ian enough.”
