In this 3rd post in this series, we’re going to continue discussing Flexibility when it comes to goal achievement – more specifically, the importance of flexibility for weight loss!
In this post, we’re going to discuss the powerful law from NLP called THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FAILURE, ONLY FEEDBACK.
The best example of this principle is a baby learning to walk.
When you watch a baby learning to walk, what do you notice? It never gives UP!!
It stumbles & falls continuously until it finally learns to walk. There is no question of the eventual outcome – it’s not a question of IF, its just a question on WHEN!!
I also like to use the example of a missile being fired towards a target. At the point of being launched, the missile is generally pointing in a totally different direction to where the target is located. But what does the missile do?
It calculates the error from where it is heading to where the target is located & makes an adjustment. After each adjustment, it checks – am I now moving closer towards my target or further away. If closer, great, lets continue making further adjustments in this direction. If further away, make a different adjustment – typically in the opposite direction. These adjustments continue until the target is reached.
So what this principle & these 2 examples are highlighting are that we seldom reach our goal during the first attempt. It might happen, but it would be rare.
Like the missile, we need to keep making different attempts & getting feedback as to whether each attempt is getting us closer or further away from our desired result. So each attempt that doesn’t hit the target is not considered a failure, but simply feedback as to how much closer, or otherwise, we are to reaching our desired end result.
We will only fail, thereby, if we stop making further attempts and making appropriate adjustment based on the feedback from the result obtain. So what does this have to do with reaching your ideal weight – EVERYTHING!
It means that each attempt we make towards reaching our ideal weight that doesn’t achieve the desired result, is simply providing us with valuable feedback as to what our next attempt should be.
Like the baby that never stops trying to walk, we should never stop trying to find the right combination of strategies that work best for us for reaching our ideal weight.
Unfortunately, most adults lose the tenacity they had as a baby when they were learning to walk! As adults, they generally give up after only a few attempts – way too early! If this wasn’t the case, just imagine how much more hugely successful they would be!
As stated in our previous posts in this series, the importance of flexibility for weight loss is paramount. My aim with these posts is to help you introduce more & more flexibility into your thinking and your life & see how this has a huge impact on your progress towards achieving your goals – esp your ideal weight!
To your optimum health, well being & ideal weight!
